Quality Assurance in The Caribbean Health Care context:
The role and value of health care accreditation systems.

This symposium, which will be held on 20 and 21 June, focuses on the processes, benefits, and challenges of a quality system, particularly in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Does (the pursuit of) accreditation lead to a better quality of care on the islands? Are the existing and most commonly used accreditation systems such as JCI also suitable for us or do we need a different approach given our circumstances and needs?
The various presentations will address the local Caribbean Dutch definitions of quality and how these are assessed. In addition to the more technical substantive section, the multiple speakers will pay attention to the importance and type of leadership required for a successful accreditation process and quality system.

In an interactive setting, two important panel discussions will occur with the management of healthcare institutions in Curaçao, Aruba, Sint Maarten, and Bonaire. Both the cure and care sectors will be discussed. From these panel discussions and the island presentations, the organizers will distill the most important points of attention for an optimal introduction and use of accreditation systems to improve and maintain the quality of care at the end of the symposium. The Public Health Inspectorates of both Aruba and Curaçao will also explain their role and findings within this quality process.
For a broader perspective, two keynote speakers will discuss the experiences with quality accreditation systems in the Netherlands and Colombia during this symposium.
