    Following graduation as obstetrician/gynaecologist at the University of Amsterdam in 1982, Hajo worked for four years in Curacao, Netherlands Antilles. Hajo initiated the "Curacao Perinatal Mortality Survey" that resulted in a dissertation and PhD-degree. Thereafter, Hajo worked for 25 years in several academic settings, including Amsterdam University Medical Center (AMC), University of Bristol (UK) and Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam (EMC), From 2011 to 2015, Hajo was employed by Westfriesgasthuis in Hoorn, a teaching hospital, where Hajo worked as a senior consultant in Obstetrics and Perinatology.
    -- Previous positions included senior lecturer at the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EMC, Rotterdam), co-director of the Erasmus Center for Migration Health and Ethnicity; director of the South-West Netherlands Prenatal Screening Foundation, chairman of the regional committee of the national perinatal audit programme;
    - Teaching. Hajo was actively involved in the curriculum for medical students of the EMC, Rotterdam Furthermore, Hajo was involved as a teacher in the master programme for clinical Midwifery (Hogeschool Rotterdam).
    - Scientific activities focussed on perinatal epidemiology, screening and health systems research. Research resulted in more than 100 publications, including 86 peer-reviewed scientific articles, several book chapters and four textbooks, including ‘When to screen in obstetrics and gynecology, edited by TJ Peters, CP Weiner and HIJ Wildschut' (2010)
    - Currently, he is manager of Wildschut Consultancy, an independent advice-giving company focusing on the improvement of the quality of maternal, fetal and newborn health care services in high- and low-resource settings, including Surinam. Together with Marjanke Spanjer, independent journalist, he edited a Dutch textbook on the history of post-war obstetrics: "Over tijd. Kantelpunten in de naoorlogse geboortezorg" that has been launched on October 28, 2022 in Amsterdam.
