Kidney Conference in Aruba
A little over a decade ago the last kidney conference was held in Aruba. It was a successful conference with various international speakers and good attendance. In the following years, there were many developments in the field of nephrology in Aruba that required more attention. The dialysis population kept growing; Aruba is now amongst the top 10 countries with a significant prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 5 requiring renal replacement therapy.
Organisashon di Nefrologonan Aruba (ONA)
Due to the growing demand, in January 2013 a new dialysis clinic was opened in San Nicolas: IMSAN dialysis clinic. From the beginning, there was intensive cooperation between the IMSAN dialysis clinic and the dialysis clinic of the Horacio Oduber Hospital(HOH). This collaborative work resulted in the founding of the ‘Organisashon di Nefrologonan Aruba’: ONA. We are the national organization of nephrologists of Aruba. By working formally together as an organization, it is our goal to offer the best treatment to all patients, according to the latest evidence and guidelines for care. The impact of our work will ultimately improve the quality of care for our patients. Currently, the ONA has 6 members: Mauro Cuba, our president, Hardjit Kharagjitsing who serves as secretary, Agustin Garcia Sanz, Ali Garcia Marquez, Maria Marta Vargas, and Romeo Kock. One of our objectives is to facilitate high-quality conferences in the region, especially for physicians who cannot attend conferences in the United States or Europe.
