Interprofessional collaboration. Guaranteeing optimal healthcare continuum
Interprofessional collaboration involves healthcare professionals from different disciplines working together to provide coordinated, patient-centered care. Effective communication, shared responsibility, mutual respect, and a clear understanding of each professional's role contribute to improved patient outcomes, particularly for patients with complex healthcare needs.
The symposium will explore this topic through various healthcare pathways in Curaçao. Local healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and hospital pharmacists, will share their experiences and perspectives. Key care pathways to be discussed include:
- Oncology care
- Diabetes care
- Elderly care
The symposium will also address collaboration at the organizational and system level, emphasizing cooperation among healthcare institutions and social sectors such as welfare, housing, and infrastructure to strengthen the continuity and quality of care.
A major focus will be the education and training of healthcare professionals in collaborative practice. Presentations will include:
- A successful interprofessional education program from University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).
- The application of Crew Resource Management (CRM) training in healthcare, highlighting communication, leadership, teamwork, and decision-making under pressure.
In addition, participants will learn about:
- The results of a local pressure ulcer care improvement project.
- Initiatives from Horacio Oduber Hospital and Sint Maarten Medical Center that promote interprofessional collaboration and provide additional professional training for healthcare workers.
