This symposium will give an overview of the ailing healthcare system and the necessity for change if we want to have a value-based healthcare system. If we want to achieve real change we need to define the topics that urgently need attention in healthcare policy and medical education (as the new generation of doctors should become true "agents of change" for attaining the necessary changes). These topics are crucial for repairing our current healthcare (and improving our health educational system) to achieve true value-based care. Several topics are underserved and need to be addressed in order to repair our current system including lifestyle and healthy aging, mental health, and planetary health. For all these topics their enormous impact on general/individual health and healthcare are currently neglected or not effectively addressed.
Achieving a health professional medical education program that prepares our new health professionals for achieving value-based care is of the utmost importance. Other areas of healthcare like diversity, equity, and inclusivity (DEI) and social justice need to be addressed as well and incorporated into medical professional education curricula. Finally, a much-improved critical appraisal of the current system primarily based on financial incentives is necessary.
Therefore, topics like critical evaluation of clinical trials, social determinants of health, and the impact of financial conflict of interest should receive due attention of medical professionals (in training).
Several examples exist of improved medical education programs in Low- and Middle-Income countries that can be used to adapt current competency-based programs in high income countries effectively.
Renowned international and local experts will present their expert views on these topics and discuss the possibilities for sustainably reaching the defined goals.
