First Conference Women’s Health in the Caribbean, 5-7 April 2019 Curaçao 

Hart- en vaatziekten bij Vrouwen zijn wereldwijd doodsoorzaak nummer één. Daarmee bedoelen we ziekten van de kransvaten, hartfalen, maar ook beroertes. Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat de meeste vrouwen in de Cariben hier niet van op de hoogte zijn. Er is een toename van hart- en vaatziekten onder vrouwen in het Caribische gebied, door een slechtere leefstijl: onvoldoende bewegen, meer overgewicht en ongezond eten.
Vrouwen krijgen hart- en vaatziekten gemiddeld 7 jaar later dan mannen. De vrouwelijke hormonen hebben een belangrijke invloed op de risicofactoren, zoals hoog cholesterol, hoge bloeddruk en suikerziekte. Ook hebben vrouwen speciale risicofactoren, zoals een hoge bloeddruk in de zwangerschap of een vroege overgang. Veel overgangsklachten kunnen een teken zijn van een hoger risico op hart- en vaatziekten. Vrouwen krijgen ook meer reumatische klachten en ontstekingsziekten na de overgang, die ook samenhangen met een hoger risico op hart- en vaatziekten. Behandeling van borstkanker kan ook hartschade veroorzaken. De levensloop bepaalt dus in belangrijke mate hoe ziekten en risicofactoren met elkaar samenhangen. Hierin komen verschillende vakgebieden zoals hart en vaatziekten, de gynaecologie en de oncologie samen. 
Vrouwen zijn vaak de spil in de familie, bepalen wat er gegeten wordt en zijn ook belangrijk in de gezondheid van de anderen in het gezin. Meer bewustzijn en aandacht voor gezondheid bij vrouwen heeft dus ook een gunstig effect op de rest van de familie. 
Van 5-7 April 2019 wordt in het Avila Beach Hotel The First conference on Women’s Health in the Caribbean georganiseerd, onder auspiciën van de NASKHO. 
We hebben hiervoor een divers programma georganiseerd waarin veel van de genoemde aspecten aan de orde komen. Het congres is interessant voor vele doelgroepen, zoals huisartsen, public Health organisaties, vrouwenorganisaties, medewerkers Fundashon Prevenshon, cardiologen, gynaecologen, internisten en oncologen etc. Samen zijn we sterk!
